HOW DO WE SLEEP?

Two processes work together to ensure that you have the physiological need for sleep at the time that you want to sleep.

Process S is the sleep “driver” – the homeostatic system

  • Driven by the body’s physiology
  • The physiological need for sleep builds while you are awake, declines while you are sleeping

Process C is the sleep “timer” – the circadian system

  • Driven by environmental cues (mostly light and dark) and biological cues (genes that express on a 24hr cycle)
  • Consolidates sleep to specific portion of the day (versus sleeping on and off at various times throughout the day)
  • Changes over the life span: older adolescents and young adults tend to have a later clock relative to others, which results in a preference for later bed and wake times.
